The analysis, classification and maintenance of a corporation's data and information relationships. It consists of the development of data fashions and data dictionaries, which, combined with transaction quantity, are the uncooked materials for database design.

Though information administration and database administration are separate functions, both are typically mixed into one department and are sometimes performed by the identical people. Nonetheless, "knowledge" administration offers with the modeling of the information and treats information as an organizational resource, while "database" administration deals with the implementation of the forms of databases which can be in use. The one who performs "knowledge" administration capabilities is a "database analyst" or "information administrator," the latter being an earlier title for the job. The one that handles "database" administration, which is the technical design and administration of the database, is the "database administrator."

The move of information/information within a company is complex because the similar knowledge are seen otherwise as they move from one department to the other.

For example: When a buyer locations an order, the order becomes a commission for sales, a statistic for advertising, an order to keep track of so as processing, an impact on cash movement for financial officers, picking schedules for the warehouse, and manufacturing scheduling for manufacturing.

Customers have completely different requirements for interrogating and updating data. Operations folks want detail, administration needs summaries. Database design should take this into consideration.
